Thomas J. Harmon, Jr. was born in Canandaigua, New York to Thomas and Phyllis Harmon and resided in various locations across New York State before moving to Kitty Hawk, N.C., Hampton, VA, and ultimately settling in Gloucester, VA, where he had made his home since 1996. He was predeceased by his parents, his son, Thomas J. Harmon, III and siblings—Bonnie, Lorraine, and Steven Harmon.
Mr. Harmon went in the U.S. Army in 1968, serving with distinction in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 as part of the Big Red One Infantry Division. His exemplary service was recognized with three Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and National Defense Medal. Following his military service, Mr. Harmon was employed by Hampton Hardwood and subsequently worked for the United States Postal Service until his retirement from Grafton, Virginia. He was a life and charter member of Military Order of Purple Heart Chapter 607 and a life and charter member of both Disable American Veteran and Vietnam Veterans of America.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Wendy Harmon, who  has been "his girl" for 61 years and married for 57 years this December; his daughter, Susan Young (Chris); grandchildren Thomas Harmon IV (Victoria), Madison Young, Noah Young; great-granddaughter Ivy Louise Harmon; sister, Phyllis (Sissy )Harmon and half sister and brother Michelle and  Mark Ancona; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many cherished friends.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to Pastor Tom Evans for his prayers and support, the staff of Homebased Primary Care at the VA Hospital, dedicated caregivers from Visiting Angels, and the team at Riverside Hospice for their compassionate care and assistance throughout Mr. Harmon's journey.
A visitation will be on Wednesday, October 8 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory, 7192 Main St., Gloucester, Virginia, followed by a memorial service at 5:00 p.m. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place later.  In lieu of flowers, you may send memorial donations to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 7314 Main Street, Gloucester VA 23061.
