Susan Wiatt Briggs, 81 the beloved wife of John D. Briggs, went to be with her Lord on Friday, May 25 th while home with the family at her side.  She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. John Mumford Wiatt Sr., her mother, Helen Farinholt Wiatt and her daughter, Betty Boyd Briggs.  She is survived by her brother, John Mumford Wiatt Jr(Susan) and sister, Margaret Wiatt Howard.       Susan leaves behind her beloved husband of 55 years, John David Briggs and her two children, John Wiatt Briggs and Susan Briggs Willard.  She also has two grandchildren, Claire Helen Willard and Connor Dawson Willard.

She was a native of Gloucester County, VA having graduated from Gloucester High School class of 1955.  She attended Mary Washington college and graduated RPI(VCU) college and Pan American Business School.  She taught at Jackson David Elementary school in Richmond, VA, Abingdon Elementary, TC Walker Middle and Achilles School in Gloucester, Va.  She also was a substitute teacher at TC Walker and Gloucester High School.  She was a member and past deacon of Grace Covenant church (formerly 1 st Presbyterian) in Gloucester, VA.  She was an associate member of The Garden Club of Gloucester and Ware River Circle of the Kings Daughters.  She was also a member of Botetourt Belles.  She was part of the Samaritan group and the Botetourt Memorial Marker Committee. She enjoyed arranging flowers for The Women's Club of Gloucester, First Presbyterian Church, The Daffodil Flower Shows and Ware River Circle of the King's Daughters.  Playing tennis at the Riverside Wellness Center in Newport News, VA and bridge with her friends were her favorite hobbies.  She started the Gloucester Bridge Program at First Presbyterian Church which is still active today.  The last ten years were spent traveling and spending winters at Cinnamon Cove Condos in Ft. Myers Florida with her husband.  She was a very active member of the Cinnamon Cove Bridge Club and tennis team.    She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her two grandchildren.

A memorial service and reception will be held at Grace Covenant Church in Gloucester, VA on Thursday June 7 th at 1 pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.  We'd like to thank the staff of Riverside Walter Reed Hospice Program, members of Grace Covenant Presbyterian and many special friends for their loving care.
