Obituary

Stephanie Maio Anthony passed from this world to eternal rest on Sunday, September 6, 2026. Stephanie was born on December 18, 1947 in Lynchburg, Virginia to William Carl Maio and Elnora Haley Maio.

Stephanie was a 1965 graduate of Brookville High School in Lynchburg, Virginia. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1969 from Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia. Her teaching career spanned from Prince William High School to Gloucester Christian Academy and finally at Ware Academy in Gloucester, Virginia. Stephanie also served as salesperson at Vashti’s Jewelers in Gloucester, Virginia. She was an active member of Mathews Baptist Church in Mathews County, Virginia where she worshipped.

Stephanie has been married to David Bertram Anthony since June 18, 2000. Stephanie was mother to Christopher Patrick McGrath of Blacksburg, Virginia. She had cherished memories of her late children, David Keith Shephered and Amanda Nicole Shepherd. Stephanie was ‘Nanny’ to three granddaughters, April Reene’ Hudgins (Preston) of Mathews, Virgina; Skyla Dream Winkle of Hampton, Virginia; and Alexis Stephanie Richardson of Gloucester, Virginia.

Stephanie enjoyed flower gardening, birdwatching and losing herself reading historical novels and detective mysteries. She delighted in jigsaw puzzles and figuring ‘whodunnit’ from watching television mysteries.

Stephanie is survived by husband, David Bertram Anthony, son Christopher, treasured grandchildren, brother William Anthony Maio (Tammy) of Roanoke, Virginia, and sister Angela Maio of Smryna, Georgia. She was also special cousin to Pamela Wright of Williamsburg, Virginia and a dear friend to Robin Thompson of Reston, Virginia.

A memorial service for Stephanie will be held at Mathews Baptist Church, Hudgins, Virginia on September 11, 2026 at 11:00 am. Graveside services will be held the same day at Beech Groove Baptist Church in Gloucester, Virginia at 1:00 pm.

The family would like to extend gratitude to the staff of the Walter Reed Cancer Center in Gloucester, Virginia and the radiation staff at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Thanks go to Craig and Suzie Turlington of King and Queen County, Virginia for loving care and support provided to Stephanie during radiation treatment in Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, Stephanie desired charity donations to Tunnels to Towers.
