Shirley Ann Deitrich Hoffman

May 22, 1938 – August 3,2026

Shirley is the daughter of the late Roscoe W. Quimby and Blanche Mildred Cilley Quimby of Epsom New Hampshire. She was born in Concord NH and resided in Epsom in her early life. Her residences were the east coast from Maine to Florida. She is preceded in death by her parents, both sons: Bennie & Brian Deitrich, and spouses John Machala and Ben Deitrich. Shirley leaves behind her husband John, sister Joan Quimby, daughters Roxann Gabany (Mike), Vickie Shackelford (Jimmy Dean), her daughter-in-law Rita Deitrich (Bennie), step-daughters Lachelle (Richard) Bonner and Denine (Richard) Smith. Grandchildren: Wanda McSparen, LeeAnn Johnston (Michael), Phillip J Wilson, Viola Wood, and Christopher Deitrich. Great Grandchildren: Rebecka, Nichole, Michael, Jacob and Logan. Shirley worked most of her adult life. She worked hard, but always had a smile and kind word. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother. She made sure that all her children were brought up in church to know the Lord and shared the love of the Lord with all those she came in contact with. While she took her job as wife and mother seriously, she also helped provide for her family and instilled a self-reliant work ethic into her children by deed, not by instruction only.

Her first job at the Lorna Dune in Epsom N.H. was as a waitress. She also held the following positions at various points of her life, until she finally chose to retire.

Concord state mental hospital as an aide (where she learned to play checkers)

Bookkeeper (billing and accounts receivable)

Strang Communications – publishing (Charisma Magazine)

Insurance (Agent) and Notary

Certified Nursing Assistant

Home Health/Caregiver

Lay minister (latest under the Church of God in Hayes, VA)

She also lived/worked on a farm with her family for a number of years.

In her spare time, she was involved in many church ministries, especially the Prayer Team (as a prayer partner and an intercessor) and the local prison ministry. She also played piano and sang in the choir.

At home she was an avid reader, was always tending to her pets, loved get-togethers with family and friends, and was always up for cards or board games. She collected stuffed animals. Outside the home, she loved to travel and also loved to ride horses.

Dementia not only steals memories but increases fears of abandonment and anxiety. The last few years were a trial of faith and patience for Shirley. Her family also faced many

challenges dealing with the progression of her dementia as they worked to provide her with the best care possible while at home and eventually while at the Walter Read Nursing Home. It truly “takes a village” of patience, understanding and compassion. We would like to thank The Martha Goodwin Center, Meaghan Pollard NP, Emma Osborne, Rebecca Schomburg-Social worker, Chris Brooks LPN, numerous aides on the memory care unit and the supportive staff at Riverside Hospice. In addition, to all others who provided supportive care to Shirley and her family through this journey. Your services and support were so appreciated.

Shirley was a member of New Life Ministry and Living Water Church of God. A celebration of life will be 2pm August 22, 2026 at New Life Ministry Church of God, 3450 George Washington Memorial HWY in Hayes. Va.
