Obituary

Lynn Davison Goeke, born April 23, 1959, passed away peacefully at her home in Virginia Beach on October 2, 2026. Vivacious and full of life, Lynn brought energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm to the people and pursuits she loved.

A 1977 graduate and homecoming queen of First Colonial High School, Lynn went on to graduate from Old Dominion University. She joined the Virginia Beach Police Department in 1985 and dedicated her career to serving her community. When she retired in 2011, she was a Captain and one of the first women to serve as Commanding Officer of the Second Precinct, which includes the Virginia Beach resort area. Her commitment to service continued well beyond her police career through volunteer work that reflected her love of the natural world.

An avid gardener, Lynn delighted in researching native plants and creating a welcoming haven for bees, butterflies, and birds. She loved watching the birds that visited her garden and had a remarkable ear for identifying them by their songs and calls. Her passion for gardening led her to volunteer at Norfolk Botanical Garden, where she shared her enthusiasm while continuing to learn. She was also a member of the Gloucester Daffodil Club and a lifetime member of the John Clayton Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society. Her mark on Gloucester can still be seen whenever the daffodils bloom.

Lynn’s love of nature also extended beneath the waves. She loved scuba diving and the opportunity to explore the sea. She also volunteered at the Virginia Aquarium, serving on the Sea Turtle Stranding Team and aboard their whale-watching boat. Another favorite way to spend the day was venturing out on the “Nauti-Dawg” to watch dolphins play off Cape Henry.

Lynn is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Alan Goeke; her sister, Kim Massey; her brothers, Mark Davison (Michele) and Scott Davison (Barbara); and her two stepdaughters, Meg Goeke and Bridget Goeke. She was predeceased by her stepdaughter, Jamie T. Goeke.

Lynn will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her love of life, and the care she gave to her community and the world around her. Her memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved her and in the moments that would have delighted her: a butterfly visiting the milkweed, bluebirds feeding their young, a new bloom on a native flower, a day on the Chesapeake Bay, or time spent on the beach beside the sea.

There will be no service at this time, but a celebration of life is planned for a later date when the spring flowers awaken and the seas are calm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Lynn’s memory by feeding the hungry, sheltering the unhoused, or by speaking for those without a voice, by donating to a charity of your choice in her name.
