Obituary

Gilbert Atkinson, born in Cleveland OH. and native of Virginia Beach Virginia, went to his forever home on November 28th, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Margaret Atkinson and brother, Donald Atkinson. Gilbert is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 65 years, his two sons, James Gilbert Atkinson and Michael Andrew Atkinson, and his daughter Julie Ann Andrews (Lee Andrews). He had four grandchildren, Christopher Andrews, Jenifer Andrews, Jimmy Atkinson Jr, and Erin Atkinson and two great grandchildren, Adrian and Nathaniel.

Gilbert spent his entire working life serving the military and US. Government. Enlisting in the Navy at the age of 17, he spent over 20 years serving his country proud here and abroad. He was stationed at Oceana and was part of the Sea and Air Rescue team. After his dedicated service to the military, he continued to serve his country as an aircraft mechanic for the Navy at the Naval Aviation depot (NADEP) in Norfolk Va.

During his retirement years, Gil and Dorothy made great memories visiting many ports of call as they cruised in the US and around the world.

Even in his retirement years, Gil could not turn off his ability to repair or engineer solutions to problems. He was the ultimate fixer, although don't let city code compliance know because he was quite the McGyver at times when it came to fixing things.

Gil loved his Cleveland Indians baseball and Browns football and the guys in the family enjoyed watching plenty of boxing matches with him during our visits.

Memorial and military honor guard services will be on Saturday, December 11th at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, Virginia. Mask are required for entering the funeral home.

The family will have a small reception following the service at their home.
