George Zhoroff, teacher, historian and scholar, passed away peacefully at his home in Mathews County, Virginia February 22, 2017 after 82 interesting years surrounded by his loving family. He was born in New York City on August 5, 1934 and raised as the only son of parents Olga and Michael in Brooklyn, New York. His intense curiosity and energy led him to a continual passion for knowledge in the Russian language, Russian and world history, Industrial Arts, sciences, math, amateur radio, reading, cycling, golf, and other intellectual and active pursuits. He attended City College of New York receiving his B.S. in Education, and received his Master's degree in the Russian language at Fordham University. George enlisted in the Army in 1955 and served two year's active duty in Germany during the Korean War in transportation and medical occupational therapy fields followed by four years' reserve duty. During college, he met Gladys Maryann Jones, of New York City. George and Gladys, both Industrial Arts teachers, married in 1959, travelled in the Soviet Union, and Western Europe, then raised their three children in Brooklyn, New York. After retiring in 1990 from teaching Industrial Arts, television production, and Russian Language in New York City public schools at the junior and senior high school and adult education levels, George and Gladys moved to Mathews County Virginia. During retirement George continued to teach electronics in Fauquier and Mathews Counties VA, and continued his lifelong interests in Russia, the Russian language and amateur radio (WA2 OFU). He was active in the Middle Peninsula Radio Club, served visiting children victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and participated in the local chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a member of St. James Anglican church. George is survived by Gladys, his wife of 57 years, and his children Elizabeth Ann Fracalossi, her husband Domenic, Carolyn Ann Segebrecht, her husband Jeff, John Michael Zhoroff, his wife Linda, five grandchildren: Anthony, Angelo, Victoria, Kaitlyn, and John, and one great-grandchild, Michael. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 with the family receiving friends until 4:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.
