Fayette Conquest Wiatt, 87, passed away at his home in Capahosic, Virginia with his family by his side throughout the holiday weekend.
Fayette was born in January of 1930 in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Jennie Marie Fields and Americus Conquest Wiatt of Gloucester. He married his high school sweetheart, Jacquelynn Walker, and celebrated sixty-eight years together. Fayette served a short period in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1950. He graduated from N.C. State College in 1965 with a degree in forestry and went on to a 29-year career with Chesapeake Corporation. He was also a meticulous craftsman and lifelong collector. He was a longtime member of the Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Gloucester Courthouse with his lifelong best friend, the Honorable Harvey B. Morgan.
Fayette was steadfast in his faith and service to others, he came within six pints of 50 gallons of blood donated to the American Red Cross, assisted the Gloucester Habitat for Humanity on numerous projects, traveled to New Orleans in the relief of Hurricane Katrina victims at the age of 75, and served with Bay Aging's Meals on Wheels for many years.
Fayette will be lovingly remembered by his two younger sisters, Roberta Wiatt of Gloucester and Nancy Wiatt Dimitry (Don) of Madison, N.J., his sister-in-law Virginia R. Walker of Gloucester, and his six children, Linda M. Spratt (Steve), Patricia Fay Wiatt (Martha), R. Mark Wiatt (Cynthia), Martha Josephine Whaley (Doug), Matthew Conquest Wiatt (Susan), Elizabeth "Lauri" Moore (Jim). He will also be fondly remembered by his eleven grandchildren, Dawn, Jennifer, Ricky, Kevin, James, Kadee, Barbara, Taliaferro, Tyler, Aaron, Jaeger, and their spouses, seven great-grandchildren, two nephews and two great-nephews.
Visitation will be held at Andrews Funeral Home on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and a graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Bellamy United Methodist Church, Gloucester, Virginia. The family will share in refreshments afterwards in the fellowship hall.
