Dale Thomas Cox Jr., lovingly known as "Skip," passed away on March 31, 2026, at the age of 73.

Skip was born on January 2, 1953, at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, to Dale Sr. and Anna L. Cox. In 1958, his family settled in Norfolk, Virginia, in the Oakdale Farms neighborhood, where Skip formed many lifelong friendships. Over the years, he mourned the loss of several close friends who preceded him in death.

Skip was one of five siblings. He was preceded in death by his brother Mike Cox and is survived by his siblings Patty Hutson (Wayne), Donna Young (Danny), and Bill Cox (Lucy).

At ages 21 and 22, Skip met the love of his life, Pat and the two were married in 1977. Skip and Pat returned to the neighborhood where he grew up and together raised their family, welcoming two children, Michele and Christopher (Chris).

A hardworking man, Skip held a variety of jobs, many related to lawn care. In 1982, he founded Skip's Lawn Care and Maintenance, which he successfully operated until his retirement in 2015.

In 1989, Skip and Pat moved to Gloucester, Virginia, where he later developed a passion for antiquing. What began with selling items at Stage Coach Flea Market eventually led to the opening of his own shop, What Not's, in 1997. Skip loved "junking," traveling to find the best deals, and spending weekends with fellow vendors swapping stories and celebrating their favorite finds. The area in front of his shop became affectionately known as "Skip's Corner," a gathering place full of laughter and friendly bragging.

Above all else, Skip's proudest role was that of Grandfather. Known fondly as "Poo Poo," he cherished every moment with his grandchildren, Marleigh, Austin, and Hannah.

Skip also enjoyed the beach, traveling, and collecting crocks, old bottles, old US currency, and antique toys, passions that reflected his love for history, craftsmanship, and simple joys.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Pat Cox; his children, Michele Stevens (Eva), and Christopher (Chris) Cox; and daughter-in-law Amanda Cox; and his cherished grandchildren, Marleigh, Austin, and Hannah.

Skip will be remembered for his warmth, his stories, his love of family, and the many lives he touched along the way. Please join the family for a Celebration of Life to be held on April 23 from 2:00–5:00 p.m. at YROC – Waterside Banquet Room, Yacht Haven Marina (above pool area), located at 8109 Yacht Haven Road, Gloucester, VA 23062. Skip would want everyone to come as they are – casual attire is welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Skip's honor be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
